We all know that the winter solstice marks the beginning of spring, but how well do our feet get warm?
When it comes to getting the most out of your winter footwear, there are two important things to keep in mind: your foot temperature and how long your feet last.
Here are some tips to help ensure that your feet are as comfortable as possible in the winter months.
What temperature does my feet need to be at in order to be warm enough to wear my feet?
Your feet need a temperature of about 25 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) in order for them to be comfortable enough to be worn in winter, says Dr. Daniel W. Shafran, director of orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
Your feet will feel warm and tingly when they reach a temperature around 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
In order to get your feet warm enough, your feet need two things: a warm, dry, and dry place to rest and cool off.
A place to lay your feet is vital, because cold feet will cause your feet to sag.
A warm, wet place is also essential.
To achieve this, use a waterproof shoe and wear socks, but be sure to use enough socks to cover your feet, says Shafren.
And finally, don’t wear any socks underneath your boots, because socks can dry out your feet.
Are there any other dangers of wearing boots outdoors?
Not so much.
Because boots are waterproof, there is no risk of getting cold feet.
And if your feet do get cold, there’s no need to worry because wearing boots indoors reduces your risk of frostbite.
Also, wearing shoes indoors decreases the risk of heatstroke, as you can wear your boots at a lower temperature and still keep them cool.
But if you do want to keep your feet as warm as possible outdoors, Shafrin says, wear shoes at a comfortable temperature, especially if you have frostbite and a history of getting frostbite, a heart condition that can lead to heart failure.
Why is it important to wear waterproof shoes?
If you are wearing your shoes outdoors in the summer, the cold will be much more likely to come in contact with your feet and your skin.
And you will need to wear socks and a hat, Shacran says.
But it’s important to remember that wearing waterproof shoes outdoors reduces your chance of frost bite.
And as you wear them indoors in the warmer months, the risk that your shoes will be frostbite-prone goes down.
How long will it take to warm my feet up?
To warm up your feet after you’ve spent a few days outside, Shapran recommends wearing boots and wearing a jacket, like a wool jacket or a cotton t-shirt, which can be layered.
And, of course, a hat to cover the mouth and nose and a scarf to cover any facial hair.
For the best results, Shafer says, use an insulated or synthetic pair of socks with waterproof heels.
You may also want to add a sock to your footwear for extra warmth when it’s colder outside, he says.
